Thousands of England fans demanded the replay of the European
Championship 2020 final against Italy, which ended Sunday with the
latter's victory on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
Fans petitioned the website "change.org" to replay the match, which was held
at the famous "Wembley" stadium in London, after they considered it a "dirty
play" by the Italian national team players.
The photo that prompted the English fans to launch petitions, which gathered
Giorgio Chiellini, the captain of the Italian national team, violently
pulling the English midfielder Bucayo Sacco from his shirt.
Followers said Chiellini deserved the red card, but only the referee of the
meeting warned him.
One of the petitions read: "Saka was mistreated during the match, as
Chiellini pulled him by his shirt and the referee gave him a yellow card,
when it was clear that he deserved a red card. I firmly believe that the
referee was so biased in favor of Italy."
Another said Chiellini "should have received a red card" and that the match "should have been replayed by an unbiased referee".
Such petitions struggle to get the attention of UEFA, which organizes the tournament, but it seems impossible to take them seriously.
Luke Shaw advanced to the English less than two minutes into the match, before Leonardo Bonucci equalized for Italy in the second half.
After a draw in extra time, the two teams resorted to penalty shootouts, as Italy won the match 3-2 to win the tournament for the second time in its history.
